At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
