Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
