Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
