The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.

Society announcements showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The message accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".

The communication warned that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
