Substantial Internet Disruption Impacts Numerous Sites and Applications

An extensive internet outage has disrupted many websites and applications worldwide, with users noting problems connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s web hosting system.

The affected platforms include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-operated platforms such as its main retail site and the Ring security doorbell company.

Throughout Britain, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and also reports of difficulties using the HMRC online portal on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring users turned to networks to complain their doorbells were failing.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of disruptions on specific apps reached the tens of thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the outage originated in the eastern region of the United States at AWS, a unit that offers essential online framework for many firms, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting service.

Just after late night (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), the company announced “higher failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the America. The ripple effect was seen to affect apps globally, and the problem monitoring service indicating issues with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on the start of the week, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the region of the eastern US data center where the company stated the problems began.
